I recently transferred hundreds of photos from my Compaq laptop to an external hard drive.The hard drive broke and I was wondering if the photos could be recovered from the laptop where they were originally.

The answer to your question is likely to be yes, it will depend on several factors including how much the laptop has been used since the photos were transferred.
There is a chance you will not get all photos back.
Depending on how the external harddrive is broken, there is probably a better chance of getting the data from this.
